  • ◆Story
  • ◆El Ingenio’s story began in 1875, when Juan Urrutia planted the first coffee trees in the farm’s high-altitude volcanic soil. Six generations later, brothers Enrique, Rene, and Gustavo continue the family’s pursuit of quality, which has taken the estate to the Cup of Excellence finals seven times.
  • ◆Only 35 hectares are dedicated to coffee, with the rest preserved as natural forest. All coffee is shade-grown beneath native trees, so the cherries mature slowly and the ecosystem is protected. The estate lies within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and has natural hot springs believed to contribute to the coffee’s distinctive profile.
  • ◆After picking, the cherries are sorted at the San Antonio mill through four depulping lines, then dry-fermented, washed, and dried on mechanical dryers and brick patios.
